What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly injection approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021 for long-term weight management.

Wegovy mimicks a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food consumption. Your body’s natural GLP-1 hormones and Wegovy work to control insulin, lower blood sugar and slow down stomach emptying. This can help you feel fuller faster, leading to reduced appetite, improved portion control and fewer cravings.

Patients taking Wegovy lost an average of 35 lbs compared to 6 lbs in the placebo group. Overall, after 68 weeks, 83% of adults taking Wegovy lost 5% or more of their weight compared to 31% of adults taking a placebo.

Wegovy is administered once a week as an injection. The dose is increased gradually over 16-20 weeks to monitor and reduce potential side effects.
